Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa emailed his resignation to the Speaker of Parliament shortly after landing in Singapore, a spokesman for the parliamentary official, Indunil Yapa, said on Thursday.

The resignation letter was forwarded to the country’s Attorney General to examine the legal aspects before being formally accepted, according to the same source.

Sri Lanka is facing one of the most violent crises in its history, since its independence in 1948. Inflation soared to 54.6% in June, strangling the population who also faced food shortages, fuel and electricity.
