The omeprazole has become a common remedy for tummy aches. This medication, used as a stomach protector, is used to alleviate the effects of discomfort caused by gastroesophageal reflux and the awkward heartburn.
This drug allows the esophageal lining to heal and prevents injury to the lining, which can cause a painful burning sensation in the chest and throat and a sour taste in the mouth.
Although it has become a quick method to relieve some of these pains, the truth is that many people resort to it more than it should be recommended. The excessive intake of this type of medication can cause us health problems and, in addition, cause a series of harmful side effects to manifest for our health.
Omeprazole Side Effects
As with other medications, there are many side effects that patients who consume omeprazole may present. Among the most frequent that can develop are some such as diarrhea, gas, nausea, abdominal pain, headache o constipation.
However, in addition to the usual ones, other more serious side effects can also occur. Most are motivated by magnesium deficiency that it can produce when the treatments are prolonged.
Despite this, these effects are reversible and usually disappear when the body gets used to the drug. These are some of those that can arise after the omeprazole intake:
– Blistering, peeling and bleeding of the skin
– Rashes, hives or swelling of eyes, face, lips, mouth and/or tongue
– Irregular, fast or pounding heartbeat, with muscle spasms, dizziness and extreme tiredness
– Severe diarrhea with watery stools, stomach pain and fever that does not go away
– Joint pain
– Rashes that worsen in sunlight
– Increased or decreased urination and blood in the urine
Among the more serious side effects of omeprazole that can occur are the following and, in case this happens, it is recommended that you contact a doctor immediately:
– Sudden wheezing when breathing (sudden wheezing), swelling of the lips, tongue and throat or of the body, skin rash, fainting or difficulty swallowing (serious allergic reaction)
– Redness of the skin with blistering or peeling. Severe blisters and bleeding may also appear on the lips, eyes, mouth, nose, and genitals. Could be Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis
– yellow coloration of the skindark urine and tiredness, which may be symptoms of liver problems
