Decision made: Thiem does not need an operation

by time news

Dominic Thiem doesn’t have to undergo surgery on his wrist after all. His doctor’s decision was eagerly awaited on Monday.

Tennis star Dominic Thiem is spared an operation on his right wrist. “There is very, very good news. I will not need an operation. The wrist has healed well, it looks stable and looks good,” announced Thiem in a Twitter video published on Monday evening.

He will use the next few weeks to further mobilize the joint and strengthen the muscles, and then slowly start again with light tennis training. “I can hardly wait to finally pick up the bat after such a long time,” emphasized the 28-year-old. So he can hope for a comeback in January at the Australian Open. Thiem recently announced that if there was no intervention, he would start again with punch training in November.

Tear in the tendon sheath

Thiem suffered a tear in the tendon sheath and the associated capsule in his right wrist at the Wimbledon preparatory tournament in Mallorca on June 22nd and has not played a match since then. In the meantime, an early return to training threw him back again. Most recently, Thiem had said that there had been a mistake in rehabilitation that made his hoped-for participation in the US Open impossible and resulted in the premature end of the season. The Lower Austrian, who had now fallen back to eighth place in the world rankings, parted ways with his long-time physiotherapist Alex Stober.

The stress test that was carried out on Monday as announced now brought the certainty that he does not have to go under the knife. The 2020 US Open winner will give more information about his plans next Monday at a press conference.
