Karaikudi : The rice mills of Karaikudi area went on strike protesting the imposition of GST and tax on rice, so the factories remained closed. There are more than 200 rice mills in Sivagangai district, including Puduwayal, Pallathur, Kandanur, in Karaikudi area. More than two thousand workers depend on this industry. Paddy is also procured from various areas including Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Kanchipuram, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and sent to Pudhuwayal Rice Mills.

Various types of rice are prepared in the modern rice mills here and rice is sent not only to Tamil Nadu but also to other states. Among the markets that determine the price of rice is the Puduyal area. In this case, the owners of rice mills across Tamil Nadu went on a symbolic strike yesterday to demand the removal of 5 percent GST tax on rice.

Due to this, the rice mills in many parts of the district including Puduvayal, Pallathur, Kandanur were closed. P.Krishnan, Member of the State Assembly, Rice Mill Owners and Traders Association: Due to the imposition of tax on rice, the workers will be affected and the lower class people will also be affected. 95 percent of people in Tamil Nadu eat only rice. This tax levy per kg of rice is Rs. 3 to Rs. 5, the price will rise, poor people will buy two or three kilos of rice per day. This 5 percent GST will give them a lot of trouble. We are totally against the imposition of GST. If the levy is not withdrawn, we will go on indefinite strike, he said.
