Jamal Khashoggi is a famous Saudi journalist. He has written articles in English and Arabic criticizing the Saudi government, its king and princes in a popular American magazine.
He was brutally murdered when he went to the Saudi Embassy in Istanbul, Turkey in October 2018.
The killing caused international shockwaves. Turkey publicly accused Khashoggi’s assassination on the orders of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. But the government of Saudi Arabia flatly denies it.
Meanwhile, Asim Kafir has been acting as the lawyer for slain Jamal Khashoggi. He is an American citizen.
Asim Kafir was arrested in UAE for money laundering and tax evasion.
In this case, the case was being investigated in the court regarding this case. The verdict in this case was announced yesterday.
Accordingly, the court sentenced Asim Kafir to 3 years imprisonment and a fine of 8.16 lakh US dollars for involvement in money laundering and tax fraud. Subsequently, Asim Kafir was imprisoned in the United Arab Emirates.
