The European Union has purchased 54,530 additional doses of a vaccine against the monkeypox virus. Member States that need them can report to Brussels. There are now 7,000 reported cases of the disease in the EU, according to the European Commission, but the vaccine is quite scarce.

The EU has previously purchased nearly 110,000 monkey pox vaccines. Six Member States have now claimed 25,000 doses, including Germany, Spain and Belgium. For the time being, there is sufficient stock in the Netherlands.

European Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides says she is concerned about the rapidly growing number of monkey pox cases in the EU. “We now have over 7,000 cases in the EU, an increase of almost 50 percent from a week ago. We responded quickly by securing doses.” These are vaccines from the Danish company Bavarian Nordic.
