However, this is a factory that has manufactured chips with old technologies. The new facility is expected to create about 1,000 jobs and will receive grants from the French government

STMicroelectronics and Global Foundries have announced that they have signed a memorandum of understanding to build a 300mm diameter semiconductor manufacturing facility that will help develop the fully depleted silicon-on-insulator (FD-SOI) ecosystem. The two companies will invest 5.7 billion euros in the new facility and it is expected to create about 1,000 jobs.

The plant, which will be built alongside an existing ST plant in Carroll, France, will be jointly operated by the companies and will support GlobalFoundries ’22FDX FD-SOI process technology and STMicroelectronics’ up to 18nm technology roadmap for automotive, industrial, IoT and communications infrastructure applications, companies said.

The facility, which will be adjacent to STMicroelectronics’ existing 300mm production site in Carrolls, France, is expected to reach full capacity by 2026, with up to 620,000 300mm chips per year. The segmentation will be as follows: about 42% for STMicroelectronics and about 58% for Global Foundries.

“This new manufacturing facility will support our ambition to reach revenue of $ 20 billion or more,” Jean-Marc Sherry, president and CEO of STMicroelectronics, said at a news conference on Monday. “We have a long-standing partnership with GlobalFoundries. We are strongly promoting the FD-SOI ecosystem, and by doing so together, we will reach a larger scale [ו]We will go faster than everyone else in Europe. “

Thomas Caulfield, CEO of Global Foundries, added, “We have a common belief in the FD-SOI platform. We have been partners for a long time, and it made sense to create a common capability to address the markets and customers we both serve. ”

The project will receive significant support from the French government.
