A company that had a turnover of just Rs.70 lakhs. A businessman who took it to a turnover of Rs 5000 crore. Success is a balance of patience, punctuality, marketing strategies and hard work. This success reminds us that business should be constantly innovating.

The story begins..

The businessman’s name is Anil Gupta. He joined his father’s electrical wire and cable business in 1980. This was after completing my MCom studies. The name of the Delhi-based company is Krishna Electrical Industries. 70 lakhs in turnover. The factory was in Old Delhi. 120 people were working there.

Today’s story

Four decades later, the story has changed. Today the company is a public limited company with a turnover of Rs.5000 crore. Currently there are 2200 employees. There are 21 offices in India. The company’s products are exported to 45 countries including Singapore, Nigeria, Kazakhstan, Dubai and Gambia.

Changes made

The main product of the company was rubber coated wires used for household appliances. But one secret of success is not to stop there and move quickly to new products. Now manufactures all types of low tension wires, high tension wires and extra high voltage power cables up to 400 kilowatts.

It later moved into the manufacture of copper alloy roads and cables. They started supplying them for thermal power plants.

In 1991, GAIL started supplying cables to large companies like Indian Oil and Bharat Petroleum. In 1993, the company was converted into a public limited company. The organization is still constantly striving to increase productivity.

Some lessons

Within a year of joining the company, the decision to drastically change the business was crucial. A large factory was then established and wires and cables were manufactured for the railways and the postal department.

Anil Gupta says visiting factories with his father from the age of 15 and trying to understand things has helped him a lot. Delivering goods to customers, attending meetings with his father, and learning about machinery and its workings at an early age became the foundation for his later business journey.
