Sri Lankan presidential election: a three-way contest

Sri Lanka’s parliament has announced that three candidates have been proposed to run for the Sri Lankan presidential election. Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapakse stepped down last week.

Prime Minister and Interim President Ranil Wickramasinghe, former minister Dalus Alagapperuma and leftist leader Anura Dissanayake have entered the presidential election field.

Prominent opposition leader Sajith Premadasa has announced his withdrawal from the presidential race. He expressed his support for Mr. Dallas.

Members of Parliament will elect a new president in a secret ballot tomorrow. The new president will hold office till 2024.

Meanwhile, demonstrations against Ranil Wickramasinghe’s candidacy for the presidential election are expected to take place today.
