War in Ukraine: Syria breaks diplomatic relations with kyiv

by time news

In accordance with the “principle of reciprocity”, Damascus announced on July 20 to end its diplomatic relations with kyiv, in reaction to the rupture already initiated by Ukraine on June 29, the date on which Syria, following in the footsteps of its ally Russian, recognized the independence of the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, reports Le Figaro.

A source at the Syrian Foreign Ministry quoted by Sana, the country’s main news agency, said: “ The Syrian Arab Republic has decided to sever diplomatic relations with Ukraine, in accordance with the principle of reciprocity and in response to the decision of the Ukrainian government. »

On June 29, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky decided to end diplomatic relations with Syria. By deciding to recognize the independence of these two regions, Syria became, after Russia, the first country to do so. Syria’s support for territories recognized by Russia as independent is not a first. In 2018, she recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia from Georgia.

While Syria and Russia have formed an alliance for several decades, their relations have strengthened considerably thanks to the Syrian conflict and Moscow’s military intervention from 2015, at the request of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
