TotalEnergies announces that its withdrawal from Burma is effective

The French oil and gas group TotalEnergies confirmed on Wednesday that it has now withdrawn from Burma, six months after making the announcement, pressed at the time by human rights NGOs after the 2021 military coup. .

“TotalEnergies has definitively withdrawn from Burma” announced the group, noting that “in accordance with the six-month notice period provided for in the contracts, this withdrawal became effective on Wednesday”.

The group thus withdrew from the Yadana gas field and from the gas transport company MGTC, of ​​which it was a shareholder and operator.

Condemnation of human rights abuses and violations

Since January, TotalEnergies has “undertaken steps to ensure its withdrawal in a responsible manner vis-à-vis its stakeholders in Burma, in particular its employees as well as the local communities supported for a long time”, added the group.

At the same time, Total claims to have “worked closely with PTTEP, the Thai national company, which has been designated as the new operator by the project partners, to guarantee the continuity of production” and ensure that all of its employees are offered jobs at the new operator.

“At a time when TotalEnergies is definitively withdrawing from Burma, our Company reiterates its condemnation of the abuses and human rights violations taking place there, reaffirms its support for the people of Burma and expresses the wish for a rapid return of the peace and the rule of law in the country”, adds the management.
