Rome: Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi has resigned after key allies boycotted the confidence vote. Draghi submitted his resignation to President Sergio Mattarella at a meeting held at the Quirinale Palace on Thursday morning.

Last week, Draghi submitted his resignation, but the president did not accept it. The President’s Office has asked Draghi to remain as caretaker Prime Minister despite his resignation, sources said.

Draghi’s government of national unity is in crisis after the Prime Minister’s allies rejected the Prime Minister’s request to complete the term of parliament and move forward with EU-funded Covid recovery plans.

The centre-right parties of Forza Italia and The League, as well as the populist Five Star Movement, boycotted the vote of confidence in the Senate. This marks the end of Mario Draghi’s 17-month reign. “Thank you for all the work done together during this period,” Draghi told the Lower Chamber of Deputies before handing in his resignation to President Sergio Mattarella.
