El Salvador backtracks with soccer commission after FIFA warning

The sports authorities of El Salvador decided this Saturday to “interrupt” the operation of a normalizing commission in the local soccer federation, in order to avoid a sanction from FIFA.

The steering committee of the state National Sports Institute (Indes), after an extraordinary session, decided “to interrupt the operation of the Normalizing Commission installed in Fesfut” last Thursday, Indes said in a statement.

According to that institution, the decision was adopted after the secretary of the Normalizing Commission, Rubén Ramírez, presented a report that covered administrative details of Fesfut, as well as aspects discussed in meetings with various “sectors” of Salvadoran soccer.

“All sectors” of Salvadoran soccer “showed interest in the reactivation” of that sport based on “complying with the laws of the Republic of El Salvador,” said INDES.

Given this scenario, the Indes added that it will be “the living forces of this sport that will solve its administrative (Fesfut), sports, legal and electoral situation as soon as possible.”

FIFA warned on Wednesday that it could suspend El Salvador from the organization if Indes continued with the “normalizing” commission. FIFA had given Indes until Monday to withdraw that commission.

This Saturday, different sectors of Salvadoran soccer, including the influential First Division of local soccer, an association of professional players, among others, after a meeting asked Indes to withdraw the commission in order to avoid a FIFA sanction.

Those sectors said that they would shortly convene a general congress of Fesfut member associations to discuss the steps to follow to “regularize” the situation in the federation.

Last week, the Prosecutor’s Office raided the Fesfut premises in the framework of an investigation for alleged fraudulent administration and money laundering, which involves the board chaired by Hugo Carrillo, who was removed from office and the house was raided.

Given the situation in Fesfut, local tournaments are suspended, including those of the First Division.
