Albania: A conference of Iranian regime opponents was canceled – because of terrorist threats

by time news

An organization of the opposition to the government in Iran canceled a mass gathering it had planned in Tirana, the capital of Albania, after the authorities warned the participants of the risk of a terrorist attack against them.

The AP agency reports that 3,000 Iranian dissidents belonging to the Mujahideen al-Khalq organization, MEK, are living in a camp near Tirana.

The conference was planned for the 23rd of the month under the slogan “Free Iran” with the participation of senators and members of Congress from the USA, calling on the Biden administration to pursue a more decisive policy against the regime in Tehran.

The Albanian government warned of terrorist threats against the participants, while the US Embassy in Tirana called on American citizens not to approach the convention area.

Mujahideen al-Khalek was originally a communist organization that opposed the Shah’s regime, but later became an organization opposed to the Ayatollahs’ rule in Tehran and its members committed several murders and bombings. Many of them left Iran and went into exile.
