This morning (Monday) the regime in Myanmar announced that it had hanged four democratic activists after nearly 50 years of not using the death penalty in the country. This may distance the country from the West after years of rapprochement. According to the regime in Myanmar, the punishment came because all four were involved in acts of terrorism. The trials in which they were sentenced to death were held between the months of January and April this year and they were convicted of assisting against the Myanmar army.

Opposition figure Kyaw Min Yew, known as “Jimmy” is one of the four executed tonight. An activist for democracy and who was an ally of Aung San Suu KyiNobel Peace Prize laureate and who was the leader of Myanmar until the coup at the beginning of last year.

The human rights organization “Amnesty International” strongly condemned the executions and said in response: “The execution is an arbitrary deprivation of human life, and it is another example of Myanmar’s appalling record when it comes to human rights. The four men were convicted by a military court in rather secretive and highly unfair. The international community must act immediately”

As a reminder, the military coup in Myanmar began last year on February 1, 2021. The coup began when State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myin and other leaders were imprisoned and arrested by the coup forces in the country. This is after years of tourism and political boom in Myanmar. Israel, Australia, New Zealand and the United States expressed concern and even condemned the revolution in 2021. They also called for the release of the officials arrested at the time. Contrary to them, Cambodia and Thailand expressly refused to support the side that characterizes the coup as an internal matter.
