Abdulhassan Banisadr, the first President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, died in Paris at the age of 88. After the overthrow of the Shah, revolutionary leader Khomeini appointed him minister of economics and foreign affairs.
Dhe former Iranian President Abdulhassan Banisadr is dead. He died on Saturday at the age of 88 “after a long illness” in a clinic in Paris, as the official Iranian news agency Irna reported, citing information from the ex-head of state. Banisadr, who was elected the first President of the Islamic Republic after the Islamic Revolution, had lived in exile in France since his fall in 1981.
After studying, Banisadr joined the opposition movement against Shah Mohammed Resa Pahlawi. In 1963 he went into exile in France. After the overthrow of the Shah in 1979, Banisadr returned to Iran. Revolutionary leader Ayatollah Khomeini initially appointed him economic and foreign minister. In January 1980, Banisadr was elected president. 17 months later he was deposed and fled again into exile in France.
