Kyiv: Russia has announced that it will withdraw from the International Space Station. Yuri Borisov, the new head of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, has announced that it will no longer participate in the International Space Station program after 2024. Russia’s position is to focus on making its own space station a reality. Russia’s sudden announcement is believed to be due to international sanctions following the Ukraine attack.

As US-Russian relations worsened after the Ukraine war, Rogozin, the head of Roscosmos at the time, announced the end of cooperation on the ISS. Russia has made it clear that it stands firm in its position beyond pressure tactics. The International Space Station is maintained by five space agencies. Apart from NASA and Roscosmos, Canada’s CSA, European Space Agency (ESA) and Japan’s JAXA are also part of the project. The International Space Station consists of the Russian Orbital Segment controlled by Russia and the United States Orbital Segment controlled by the United States and other partner nations.

The International Space Station is the largest man-made object in space. It is a joint venture between America, Russia, Japan, Canada and European countries. The station operates on the basis of international agreements between these countries. It is the first manned spacecraft in space for 22 years. Russia’s withdrawal from the probe, which orbits the Earth nearly 400 kilometers away, marks the end of one of the largest post-Cold War US-Russia cooperation projects. The first module of the space station was launched in 1998. The station has been permanently inhabited since November 2000.
