Chennai: The central government has declared 3 wetlands in Tamil Nadu as ‘Ramsar’ sites.

5 wetlands in India have been declared as “Ramsar” sites. Among these, Tamil Nadu’s Karikli Bird Sanctuary, Pallikaranai Swamp Forest, Pichavaram Swamp Forest have been declared as Ramsar Sites of International Importance. Pala Swamp in Mizoram and Sakya Sagar Swamp in Madhya Pradesh are included in this list. With this, the number of Ramsar sites in India has increased from 49 to 54.

Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav posted on Twitter, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative in environmental protection will show how India has maintained and improved wetlands. It is heartening to see 5 more Indian wetlands recognized as Ramsar of international importance.” It is said in the post.
