Manila: Strong earthquake hits northern Philippines. It registered 7.1 on the Richter scale. The US Geological Survey said windows of buildings in the epicenter were shattered and high-rise towers more than 300 km (185 miles) from the capital, Manila, shook.

After an initial 6.8-magnitude tremor, the shallow but powerful earthquake hit the mountainous and sparsely populated Abra province of Luzon’s main island at 8:43 a.m. Shallow earthquakes cause more damage than deep earthquakes.

Police Major Edwin Sergio told AFP that in Dolores, people ran out of buildings and windows of the local market were shattered. The earthquake was very strong. Minor tremors were felt in the police station building.

After the tables were overturned, vegetables and fruits were scattered. A video shared on Facebook showed cracks in the asphalt road and ground in the nearby town of Bungade, but there was no visible damage to shops or houses.
