When one country in the world is experiencing high growth, another country on earth is facing severe problems during the same period. This has been proven time and again throughout history. The city of Hashima is still a witness to this. Located south of Nagasaki, Japan, this island city has a gruesome history.

Coal

In the latter part of the 18th century, coal was discovered on the island of Takashima, near Hashima Island. Ships in those days were mostly powered by steam. It requires a lot of coal. A coal mine was built on the island during the period when Nagasaki city port was liberalized. Slaves were brought in from Korea to work in this mine.

The city of Nagasaki rose to the height of wealth thanks to the slaves who worked 20-hour days straight. This island of Hashima was built for slaves who were brought in for coal mining. Accommodations for slaves were set up on this sand dune island. They cannot easily escape from here. Because if you want to go to Japan from there, you have to swim several kilometers. Those staying here have been provided with less food. The island has many dark sides such as deaths from mining, starvation and lack of sanitation.

Abandonment

7 storied buildings were built on this island as early as 1916. Although many facilities such as schools and amusement parks have been established, all of them have been provided only to Japanese high officials. Historians say that the number of people who decided to escape from here and drowned in the sea is very high. Finally, the island has been abandoned as the demand for coal has decreased and countries have turned to alternative fuels. This means that the people who were here in 1974 have completely left.

Hell

Due to the sea erosion, the buildings here have been ruined and are frightening to look at. Speaking about this, Kim Hung, who was a slave on this island, said, “I don’t want to think about that island. If there is such a thing as hell in the world, it is that island. Many of my friends died trying to escape from there. But it is better to die than to survive from this island.”
