Sports world eyes on Commonwealth Games opening ceremony, Sindhu and Manpreet to lead India

Birmingham: The sports world is looking forward to the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games (CWG 2022) in Birmingham, England. Badminton star PV Sindhu and hockey captain Manpreet Singh will lead India in the colorful march past at the opening ceremony at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham at 12 PM IST. In 2018, Sindhu was the national flag bearer of India at the Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast. Manpreet was one of India’s flag bearers at last year’s Tokyo Olympics.

The Indian women’s cricket team members will not participate in the opening ceremony as they have a match against Australia on Friday. Before the march past, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished the Indian team success.

5054 athletes from 72 countries will compete in 280 sports in the 11-day Games till August 8. 215 athletes from India are competing in 15 events. Along with them, India’s jumbo team consists of 107 people including officials and support staff. Although there is no shooting this time, India has medal hopes in wrestling, boxing, badminton, hockey and cricket. The Games will conclude on August 8.

Sony Sports Network will telecast the matches in India on television and digital platforms. Games can be seen on Sony Six, Sony Ten 1, Sony Ten 2, Sony Ten 3 and Sony Ten 4 channels.

Medal hopes

PV Sindhu, Mirabhai Chanu, Lovlina Borgohain, Bajrang Punia, Ravikumar Dahiya, Manika Batra, Vinesh Phogat, Tajinderpal Singh, Hima Das and Amit Pankal are the Indian team this time. India finished third behind Australia and England in the medal hunt at the 2018 Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast.
