After a stormy session this Tuesday, July 26 in the Lebanese Parliament – during which the indestructible head of Parliament, in office since 1992, launched “Sit down and shut up” to a member from the protest movement –Amnesty International has stepped up to denounce an act “ashamed” which, according to the NGO, is part of the more global framework of a misogynistic and macho culture which dominates Lebanese political life.
“It is shameful that female members of the Lebanese Parliament, especially those who criticize the authorities, are harassed by their male counterparts and by the Speaker of the House himself, simply because they are women.”
