On July 26, 12 girls aged between 8 and 17 were on board a train from the northern state at the Kozhikode railway station. They were accompanied by four adults. Suspicious of their activities, some passengers in the train informed the railway police.
When the police interrogated the four people who accompanied the girls, it came to light that they were taking the girls to a shelter in Perumbavoor. As they contradicted each other about this, the girls were handed over to the Kozhikode government shelter.
It was learned that two of those who had accompanied the girls were their parents and the others were brokers for kidnapping the girls. It also came to light that the orphanage that was going to take the girls did not have proper permission. Following this, the railway police arrested the administrator of the orphanage, Christian preacher Jacob Varkeesh, brokers Lokesh Kumar and Shyamalal.
