Toronto Film Festival lands premiere of Spielberg’s autobiography

Entitled Fabelmansthis story about the childhood of the filmmaker ET in post-war Arizona was highly courted by the Venice Film Festival. It will finally be presented in Canada.

It was the film of which the artistic director of Venice Alberto Barbera dreamed and the only one which escaped the ogre appetite of the Mostra where will be projected in preview Blonde, Tal or White Noise. The FabelmansSteven Spielberg’s autobiographical account of his childhood and adolescence in post-war Arizona, will have its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.

Conceived as a “portrait of a childhood in the XXe American century, The Fabelmans promises, according to its synopsis, “a coming-of-age tale through a young man’s discovery of a heartbreaking family secret and his exploration of the power of movies to help us see the truth about others and ourselves.”

To recreate his home, Steven Spielberg called on Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, Gabriel LaBelle, Jeannie Berlin, Julia Butters and Robin Bartlett. This dive into the memories of the director of ET and of Schindler’s list will be out in November.

Taking place from September 8 to 18, the Toronto Film Festival is another decisive launchpad in the race for the Oscars. There will therefore be a number of actors and filmmakers seeking nominations.

Stars returning to the Canadian red carpet include actress Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne, starring in The Good Nurse. Not to mention pop superstar Harry Styles, who plays a gay cop in the 1950s in My Policeman. He gives the reply to Princess Diana of The CrownEmma Corrin.

From Venice to Toronto

Some films in the running for the golden lion in Venice will also be shown in Toronto, such as The Son by Florian Zeller or The Whale by Darren Aronofsky, portrait of an obese recluse portrayed by Brendan Fraser.

Last year, unlike other festivals like Venice and Cannes which had almost returned to their “normal” version, the Toronto festival had opted for a mixture of virtual and real screenings, with restricted reception capacities in the movie theater. After two editions at reduced capacity due to the pandemic, moviegoers are impatiently awaiting the return to normal of the Canadian festival. The TIFF does not award a palm or a bear like in Cannes or Berlin, but an audience award that often sets the pace for Hollywood’s winter awards.
