Haydn 2032, vol. 12: Games and pleasures

Symphonies No. 61 in D major. Symphony No. 66 in B flat major. Toy Symphony in C major. Symphony No. 69 in C major. Basel Chamber Orchestra, Giovanni Antonini (conductor)

In view of the tercentenary of Joseph Haydn’s birth in 2032, the Alpha label and the Joseph Haydn Foundation in Basel have undertaken, since 2015, the complete recording of the composer’s 107 symphonies. A real musical and editorial challenge. To embellish the ordinary, they have discarded the chronological statement to favor an exciting thematization of the works. This is how volume n° 12 transports us to the brilliant and playful atmosphere of symphonies 61, 66 and 69, composed with a view to the daily performances produced in the spring of 1776 at the princely court of the Esterhazys, with whom Haydn would officiate for around thirty of years. The “Toy” Symphony, attributed to Haydn for two centuries, before it was discovered that it probably belongs to an unknown author, completes the program. At the head of a particularly virtuoso Basel Chamber Orchestra, Giovanni Antonini draws with a lively line the contours of a music entirely dedicated to happiness and joy. Marie Aude Roux

Cover of the album “Exils”, by Elsa Moatti.

Highlighting the presentation of this program rooted in multiple cultures, Elsa Moatti symbolically recalled the Latin etymology of the word, “Exile”, chosen as the title of the album: “ex(s) ilium: literally, out of the ground”. In fact, most of the music that punctuates this magnificent ensemble gives the impression of emerging from the artist’s own soil, from the human soil that has been formed through significant encounters. For example, with the Finnish nature of which Elsa Moatti gives a very sensitive echo through brief but captivating incantations which she associates with a Finnish word (which means ” voyager », « reverie » et « dawn “). Although the violinist judiciously incorporates a few pieces from the repertoire into her career, such as Baal Shem, by Ernest Bloch, of which she gives a thrilling interpretation, the best complement to her own creations is provided by those of her friends. In particular Fiona Monbet, who seems in every way her alter ego. Pierre Gervasoni
