Rome: An African citizen who is a street vendor was brutally attacked and killed in Italy.
Alika Ogorchukwu, a Nigerian immigrant, was killed in the attack.
The police have arrested the Italian citizen who was the attacker in the incident. The police arrested a 32-year-old man named Filippo Claudio Giuseppe Ferlazzo.
He also reportedly stole Ogorchukwu’s phone. The incident happened on Friday.
Police said the 39-year-old Ogorchukwu, who was selling goods on the main street of Civitanova Marche, a busy beach town on the Adriatic coast, was knocked down and beaten with his own crutches.
Video footage of the incident has also been released. The video was shot and released by those who witnessed the attack.
In the video, the assailant can be seen standing and punching Ogorchukwu on the pavement. Some have suggested that Ogorchukwu’s attack is similar to the incident in which George Floyd, a black man, was killed by the police in the United States.
The video was widely circulated on Italian news websites and social media.
Meanwhile, protests are intensifying in Italy over the death of the African national. The video was also criticized for not even intervening to stop the attack.
The death of the African citizen has been discussed in the country as Italy is about to enter the parliamentary elections. It is also noteworthy that the death of the African citizen came at a time when the right-wing alliances competing in the elections made migration to Italy an election issue.
