The disease was confirmed abroad

The young man was diagnosed with monkeypox during the examination conducted abroad. However, the health minister said that the report was given by the relatives yesterday. The young man who arrived from the UAE on the 21st of this month was admitted to a private hospital in Thrissur with monkeypox symptoms on the 27th. The health minister said that a high-level team will be appointed to investigate the incident. Delay in seeking treatment at the hospital will also be investigated.

The young man sought treatment for brain fever and severe fatigue. It is suspected that the young man had other diseases.

Low diffusion capacity

At the same time, the health minister stated that the monkey pox variant currently found in Kerala is less contagious and precautionary measures have been taken to prevent the spread of the disease.

As the suspicion arose that the death of the young man was due to monkeypox, the health department called a meeting in Punnayur and prepared the route map of the dead young man and found those who were in the contact list with him.

Can monkey pox cause death?

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), monkeypox continues to spread worldwide. Currently, more than 21,100 cases have been reported worldwide.

Between May 13 and July 22, the European region reported an increase in the number of cases, with eight percent of those infected being hospitalized. Since the beginning of May, the disease has been detected in 78 countries outside Africa.

But more worrying than this, monkeypox deaths have been reported outside of Africa. Two people have died in Spain in the last few days, while one death has been reported in Brazil. This number may go up if the Thrissur native also tests positive.

At the same time, the most reassuring thing is that the death rate is still very low.

According to the World Health Organization report, the possibility of dying from monkeypox cannot be ruled out. However, there is no need to worry about the current spread. The current type of monkeypox is said to be the reason for this.

Monkeypox virus has two distinct genetic clades. They are the virus originating in Central Africa (Congo Basin) and the virus originating in West Africa.

Experts point out that the variant from the Congo Basin may cause a more serious disease. It is also more likely to spread. Based on reports, the mortality rate of the variant originating from the Congo Basin ranges from 6 to 11 percent. Cameroon is the only country where both clades have been found so far.

However, it is reported that this is not the variant that led to the current outbreak of monkey pox. The virus originated in West Africa and is now spreading globally. It also has a very low mortality rate of about one percent or less.

Don’t worry

ICMR said there is no need for monkeypox concern in the country. The ICMR has stated that monkeypox in India is not the European variant. The B-1 variant is very widespread in Europe. The samples of two infected people in Kerala were subjected to genetic sequencing and the A-2 variant was confirmed. According to the scientists of National Institute of Virology, Pune and ICMR, who conducted the study, it has relatively low spread potential and there is no cause for concern.
