Manila ∙ Fidel Valdes Ramos (94), former president of the Philippines and leader of the 1986 democracy uprising, has died. He was undergoing treatment for heart disease.

Ramos, who was the police chief of dictator Ferdinand Marcos, defected in 1986 and joined the agitators. Ramos, the army chief and defense secretary of Corazon Aquino, who overthrew Marcos, ran for president in the 1992 elections.
