Manila ∙ Fidel Valdes Ramos (94), former president of the Philippines and leader of the 1986 democracy uprising, has died. He was undergoing treatment for heart disease.
Ramos, who was the police chief of dictator Ferdinand Marcos, defected in 1986 and joined the agitators. Ramos, the army chief and defense secretary of Corazon Aquino, who overthrew Marcos, ran for president in the 1992 elections.
Until his resignation in 1998, he was known as ‘Steady Teddy’ due to the steps he took to improve the country’s economy. The son of a former secretary of state, Ramos graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point and served in the Korean and Vietnam wars.
His wife Amelit Ming Ramos is a prominent environmental activist. Has four daughters. Son Joe Ramos Samaritino died in 2011.
