Presidential pardon available to Ranjan Ramanayake Vijayadasa Rajapaksa

by time news

Constitutional Affairs Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapaksa, as Minister, received case briefs from the Chancellor and submitted his recommendations to President Ranil Wickremesinghe as per protocol.

Therefore, he has expressed hope that Ranjan Ramanayake will get presidential amnesty.

Five years ago last August (21), a contempt of court case was registered against the former state minister for making defamatory remarks against the judiciary.

Speaking to the media after meeting the then Prime Minister Wickremesinghe at Alarimalika, Ranjan Ramanayake said that the majority of judges in the country give biased judgments and that they are corrupt.

It is also noteworthy that such defamatory remarks were alleged to undermine public confidence and give a distorted image of the judiciary to the people of Sri Lanka.

In January last year, the High Court sentenced former Member of Parliament Ranjan Ramanayake to four years of rigorous imprisonment in a contempt of court case related to this crime.
