ROLF WITTELER: It all depends on who you ask the question. An artist like Zaz, whose debut album sold millions of copies, is still well known ten years after her debut. When Louane or [la Québécoise] Cœur de pirate go on tour, they fill the biggest rooms.
Radio is a more difficult terrain for French-speaking singers because of certain well-established prejudices, in particular that which makes French a language of intellectuals. Experience shows, however, that on the indie scene, even the “new French song” can break through. Witness the success of Fredda or Françoiz Breut, two artists whose German fans represent a significant part of their audience – and who can also be found here on the major cultural media.
Twenty years ago, when the first compilation And Pop came out, we could legitimately believe that, with names like Benjamin Biolay or Françoiz Breut, French song had every chance of succeeding in Germany.
