Malappuram: As widespread protests against the plight of the state’s roads are taking place, the locals of Malappuram are protesting differently. The locals protested that the potholed road was turned into a ‘swimming pool’. At this time the local MLA UA Latif also reached the spot unexpectedly. When the protestors complained about the condition of the road, the League MLA from Mancheri advised them to plant bananas.

The protestors replied that the MLA should be alert. The protest took place on Malappuram Mancheri Olipuzha Road in East Pandikkad. The MLA said that he had complained to the minister and the district development committee about the poor condition of the road. Meanwhile, the war of words between Public Works Minister Mohammad Riaz and the opposition continues over potholes on the road. Minister Mohammad Riaz said that no matter which department the road belongs to, there should not be potholes.

Since the creation of Kerala, there are potholes on the roads and we cannot stand idly by. The minister also said that after the publication of the DLP board, the condition of public roads has improved. However, Muslim League leader PK Kunhalikutty retorted that if you see a pothole on the road, you will know it is the government’s work. There is no money to dig holes in the road. If it goes like this, there will have to be an immediate agitation. Kunhalikutty also opined that the government has failed in terms of action. Hashim, a hotel worker, died after falling into a pothole on the national highway in Nedumbassery, including the High Court.

Justice Devan Ramachandran of the Kerala High Court directed the National Highway Authority of India’s Kerala Regional Officer and Palakkatte Project Director to close the potholes on the national highways. Leader of the Opposition VD Satheesan came forward against Minister Muhammad Riaz who blamed the National Highway Authority for Hashim’s death. The opposition leader accused Muhammad Riaz of trying to hide the mismanagement in his own department in potholes.

Whether it is a national ditch or a state ditch, it is human beings who die. The Public Works Department has a Chief Engineer and officers of the NH section. They are also responsible for the road issue. The opposition leader also demanded that the toll collection on the potholed road should be stopped. The opposition leader also accused the public works minister of hiding his own mismanagement.
