Popular car brand Subaru has announced a recall of nearly 80,000 cars due to faulty electronic brakes. A total of 78,617 vehicles in a variety of popular models made between 2015 and 2019 were affected by the fault.

A damaged cable inside the electric parking brakes could lead to parked cars rolling, which could cause damage to its surroundings and could be fatal. “Due to a manufacturing issue, the electronic parking brake (EPB) adapter cable connector may not function as intended,” the Department for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications said.

“This may cause the vehicle to move or roll while the vehicle is active in the parking position. If the vehicle moves from its parked position without supervision, this may increase the risk of an accident causing injury or death to the occupants of the vehicle and/or other road users,” it added.

The recall affects Liberty, Outback, Laborg wagons and WRX sedans manufactured between 2015 and 2018, Impreza models and XV models manufactured between 2017 and 2019 are also affected, owners of these models can order their vehicle for a free repair at any authorized service center of Subaru Australia wide.

Subaru Australia will also contact affected owners in writing to ask the owner to make an appointment to have the vehicle repaired. Owners can find the contact information for their nearest authorized dealer by entering their zip code here and selecting “Service” from the “Department” drop-down menu.
