Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has left Singapore, the city-state’s immigration office said, as Rajapaksa’s social visit permit to stay in Singapore expired.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who fled his home country of Sri Lanka last month after widespread protests, has now taken refuge in Thailand. Troubled by his administration’s handling of the worst economic crisis in seven decades since independence, he is on the run from country to country.

Rajapaksa fled to Singapore on 14 July, days after tens of thousands of protesters besieged the president’s palace and office following a worsening of Sri Lanka’s economic situation and an upheaval against Rajapaksa.

Rajapaksa, who left his homeland and resigned from his post, has now gone to Thailand on a 90-day visa after the end of his stay in Singapore.

But after that, Rajapaksa is said to be returning to Sri Lanka in November as there is no chance of getting temporary asylum in another country.

Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha assured foreign media yesterday (August 11, 2022) that Rajapaksa will be allowed into Thailand on humanitarian grounds and it will only be a short visit.

The Sri Lankan government directly filed a petition on behalf of former President Gotabaya Rajapakshev to get permission for Rajapaksa, who is temporarily living in Thailand.

The Sri Lankan administration is in touch with the governments of Singapore, Maldives and now Thailand to accommodate Rajapaksa. The Sri Lankan newspaper Daily Mirror reported that only government money paid for the Air Force jet that took him and his wife from Colombo to Male last month.

He and his son Manoj Rajapaksa shouldered the other expenses of Rajapaksa and his family leaving the country.
