Europe’s blind spot: dead refugees in the Mediterranean – flight and politics

For more than a week, the overcrowded Geo Barents sailed in waiting position off the coast of Europe. After several rescue operations in the central Mediterranean, the aid ship had 659 migrants and refugees on board – including more than 150 minors, two pregnant women and several small children. Appeals to the European coastal states to provide a safe harbor failed. Finally, the Geo Barents was allowed to enter Taranto, Apulia.
