The culture of the free: how to consume culture in the city without spending money

Free movie at Madalor Cinema

Not only is it an opportunity to see excellent movies (say, Zero in Human Relations, La La Land and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) for free, but it’s a chance to see them in one of the most beautiful locations in the city – Cafe Magdalor, which is located next to the iconic lighthouse of Reading. Every Tuesday during the summer, just after sunset that will warm your eyes, you can sit on a mat and watch the screening in a romantic atmosphere. Bring the popcorn from home.

Free performances at Kuli Alma

It’s true, the fact that the Kholi Alma has become a breeding ground for sexually transmitted diseases of tourists may be a little tiring for some Tel Avivians to wait in the long line, but even through all the excuses – these are still the most enjoyable bars in the city. And a good part of the pleasure is in well-managed bookings that bring great DJs and above all a lot of live performances by artists from a wide range ranging from really cool to wow it’s a shock that it’s free. With a justified bias towards hip-hop and indie bands that don’t get enough of an audience and the brilliance of the veteran deliners who come to pay their respects, the crowding is definitely worth it. Call it intimacy.

Free concerts, recordings, parties and exhibitions on a regular basis

It’s not for nothing that we called it the most important cultural center in Tel Aviv – you can often find wonderful free events practically every day. Receptions in Nueva, Friday parties in Romano, crowded performances at the rafi, fairs on the weekends, exhibitions in side rooms and countless huge events that make it the capital of the city’s free events. Every random day throw a stone there and you will hit something fun to do without spending a shekel. In other words, don’t throw a stone, They will blow you away. Just come and have fun (and chilling in the track park is also free).

Free performances on behalf of the municipality throughout the city

Not that we lack criticism of the municipality, but when it comes, it comes – the city’s culture department goes above and beyond to provide the city’s residents with diverse cultural events, and for free. It’s almost unbelievable how easy it is to enter the events and shows tab on the municipality’s website and find lots of free entertainment, sometimes even ones that money can’t buy. Only this week you can find a performance by Assaf Amdorski in the station park and a free opera performance, with “Carmen in the Park”, as well as a surf film festival, summer concerts in Jaffa and a truly impressive abundance.

house parties

Some will see it as easy cheating, but for us an event is an event. Every day there are countless house/rooftop parties in Tel Aviv, and it’s not that hard to find them. Just walk around the street until you hear music, and follow the trail of the celebration to its source. You will be surprised how much the sentence “we heard the music outside and flew, can we join you?” will open doors for you. Of course, it’s important to pay attention to the size of the party – you don’t want to burst into a couple who got a little wild with the volume at home. Be polite, curious and social, and the party will already invite you in.

Free parties in bars

If you are still a little shy to knock on archaic doors, you can always go for the easier and more popular option – take advantage of one of the hundreds of Tel Aviv bars. Actually, it’s not exploitation if you buy beer there, but there are tons of bars that organize real parties with free entry, and they won’t really bother to check how many drinks you’ve had while you’re going wild on the square. From the IPGB through the pie to dim bars in Dizengoff, there are countless parties that take place every night. If you don’t feel like walking down the street to hunt down the party, just go to the events on Pace, and look for what’s happening around them in the coming week. You’ll find a lot of bad party designs there that aren’t bad at all, and most importantly, completely free.

Drink for free at exhibition openings

This exercise has been done in Tel Aviv since the days of Kasit – dress up lightly in the early evening, walk in an area full of galleries – preferably in the south of Tel Aviv, no one there cares – and look for gatherings. Most of the time you will find a folding table with a few bottles of cheap wine and lots of visual stimuli to stare at while you get drunk. Don’t worry about the fact that you don’t know anyone – they hate each other anyway, and the artist will probably be happy that he attracted an audience that is not part of his committed family members. If someone asks you something, just say that the work is “indecipherable and yet clear as the sun” and take another shlok.

The unnecessary standup is free

Quietly, quietly, the line of what used to be called the “alternative standup” became an institution, traveled between several houses, finally landed in the renewed ear and most importantly – remained completely free. Between beginners and amateurs and just weird in a good way, you will occasionally find here some of the more senior stand-up artists who drop by to pay a visit (last week, for example, Alfie puppies appeared there). The best place to laugh without burning cash.

Free movies Gan Psega

In one of the most beautiful locations in Old Jaffa – and believe us the bar is high – there is a movie screening every Wednesday in the most romantic atmosphere you could ask for. The selection is meticulous, the atmosphere is romantic and everything is free, no money only today. Sorry, actually only on Wednesdays. This week you can watch the nineties cult film “Strong Record” there, and at the end of the month you will find there a screening of “A Star Is Born” by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, so along the way you also get a musical-cinematic experience.

Documentary Shapira

Pop Hollywood movies are really nice for light entertainment, but when you want to feed your head the most entertaining solution of all is probably the documentary. And no, the Netflix murder docu doesn’t count. At Cafe Shapira, every Wednesday, various documentaries are screened, usually accompanied by a meeting of creators, with each month having a different theme. Although you’ve already missed the Phil Good month, there’s still time to catch up on August’s “citizenship lessons”. It may sound like a school, but in reality it presents a series of enlightening documentary films in preparation for the upcoming elections. Perhaps to sweeten this somewhat bitter pill, the August screenings will travel to air-conditioned locations, but remain at a cost price of NIS 0 (although donations are welcome).

Street libraries

Once upon a time, in the days when there was no screen in every hand, books were our favorite culture format. A whole world is wrapped between the pages. So it’s true, our ability to read has eroded, but the power of books has not died. And the beauty is that you don’t have to commit to an insulting purchase at one of the chains (because who needs a 21-year-old saleswoman patronizing you?). There are plenty of street libraries scattered around the city that are always worth a look. True, most of them are mainly accompanied by flight books and leftovers, but in each of them there is at least one bargain – a battered classic, a surprising young novel or just a flight book that I would have fun with – and it is not easy to pick up and read. Just don’t be maniacs, give back and if you have some at home, donate.

Ariela’s house

And maybe what you really need is a traditional library with a modern take. In recent years, the investment that the municipality poured into Beit Ariela is starting to pay off, and beyond the pleasant design and atmosphere, residents can enjoy air-conditioned recreation, browsing books, archives and extraordinary collections that are archived even without making a subscription. From time to time there are also book launches, lectures, workshops and a variety of other interesting cultural events. It is worth checking on one of the library’s social networks, and not to be confused with the bar. It’s a different kind of entertainment, but less free.

What do you see for free?

You don’t always have to go out to consume culture for free, and God forbid, we are in the era of free internet. Even without feeling like pirates, you can find endless great free content online, starting with all the corporate content, among them the great programs that are all here 11, here digital, educational (there is a lot of amazing content there for adults as well, and you are still children stuck in the body of an adult), through time YouTube’s endless to free VOD libraries. There are also quite a few free streaming networks that may not have Stranger Things style originals, but will allow you to watch thousands of hours of content. We highly recommend Classic Cinema Online, which has an almost absurd classic catalog. Come on, want to see. I mean, don’t run. Sit down, it’s comfortable.
