People are worried as the River Thames in England is at its driest ever. July is the driest month in England since 1935. The average rainfall is 23.1 mm. This is only 35% of the average rainfall for the month. The source of the River Thames is drier than ever, and some experts say the UK is facing a severe drought. Some parts of the country experienced unprecedented drought in July. The River Thames stretches across southern England for 215 miles (356 kilometers) from Gloucestershire in the west through central London to the sea in Essex in the east.

The natural spring known as the source of the river dries up most summers. But this year the dry riverbed has reached a worse level than previous years. A four-day heat warning was in effect for parts of England and Wales. The Met Office issued the first such warning last month when temperatures topped 40C (104F) for the first time.

Climate expert and hydrologist at the University of Reading, Hannah Cloke, said the reduced rainfall has reduced river levels and water levels, while water has been withdrawn from aqueducts to irrigate crops, replenish drinking water and for industrial use. If we don’t get rain in August, we may indeed have a dry winter. He said that in the spring and next summer, there will be a serious problem when there is no water in the reservoirs.
