Tamron has announced that it is in the advanced stages of development of the 20-40mm F/2.8 Di III VXD lens for Sony cameras (FF) which will reach the market towards the end of this year. Just like the 50-400mm F4.5-6.3 lens, the development of which was announced a few weeks ago, here too it is a unique focal length and a lens with a number of surprising features, although the full specifications of the lens have not yet been revealed.
20-40mm F/2.8 Di III VXD – what do we know?
Unlike Tamron’s expected 50-400mm F4.5-6.3 lens that we recently reported here, the company has released very few details about the lens that will hit the market this fall (and for all those asking – no, there is no price information at this time).
What is known about the lens – here are some details – the new Tamron fast focus engine (VXD) is integrated into the lens. The minimum focus distance of the lens is only 17 cm (with a focal length of 20 mm) with a macro magnification ratio of 1:3.8 – not a close-up lens but above average for a wide zoom lens. In addition, it will be very light – only 365 grams and very compact – 8.6. cm. Its zoom ring has a very short rotation (only 65 degrees), which will allow a quick change of the zoom.

So much for the details that Tamron published – from the two pictures that went online, the lens does not have an aperture ring nor any control buttons on the lens (although it is possible and there are some on the side that are not visible in the pictures). Beyond these it is important to note that the lens also has a suitable focal length for use on Sony crop cameras (so it will provide an angle equivalent to that of a 35mm to 60mm lens) and the company did publish one image of the lens with a crop camera, or at least This can be seen in the following picture:
