Delhi has topped the list of the world’s worst polluted cities for the second time in a row, according to the Global Air Initiative’s Health Effects Institute.
The Health Effects Institute (HEI) of America, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation Global Burden Disease Report jointly published a report on air quality in cities internationally.
Pollution of cities is calculated and ranked based on PM.2, which is fine particulate matter in the air, and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). When these particles, which are smaller than the weight of a hair, mix in the air and increase in percentage, people who breathe them will suffer from lung-related diseases and respiratory disorders.
In this, road traffic congestion, high volume of vehicles, etc. cause nitrogen dioxide to escape and mix in the air.

For the second time in the list of the worst polluted cities, Delhi has topped the list, followed by Kolkata. Mumbai city is at 14th position. Delhi has an annual average PM2.5 of 110cm and Kolkata 84cm.
According to the World Health Organization, the amount of fine dust in the air can be as low as 5 micrograms per cubic meter. But Delhi has 22 times more than that at 110cm.

Beijing is at the highest risk of death due to increased PM2.5 with 124 deaths per 100,000 people. Delhi ranks 6th with 106 deaths per 1 lakh population and Kolkata with 99 deaths per 1 lakh population. 5 cities in China are in the top 20 list.
Shanghai, China is the worst city for nitrous oxide emissions. No Indian city is in the top-20 list for nitrous oxide emissions. Shanghai has 41.6 micrograms of nitrous oxide per cubic meter.
