Tirupur: There is shortage of stamp paper in many districts across Tamil Nadu including Coimbatore, Tirupur; The Tamil Nadu government has demanded immediate action.

There are 575 deed registration offices functioning under the registration department in Tamil Nadu. A stamp paper of Rs 5,000 to Rs 25,000 is mainly used to purchase property in the registry office. In Tamil Nadu, stamps are sold through more than 5,000 stamp vendors.

For the past one year, there has been an increase in the shortage of stamps worth Rs 5,000 to Rs 25,000, which are widely used by people in many districts of Tamil Nadu including Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Tirupur, Erode, Karur, Namakkal.

To avoid complications during deed registration, ‘e-stamping’ is also in place to pay electronic stamp duty. People are not willing to use this new system fully. Due to this, they are asking for stamp paper more. For them, scarcity continues without enough to supply.

Increased bond enrollment

Coimbatore District Stamp Dealers Association President Sundararaman said, “Coimbatore District Treasury and Sub-Treasury have not been issuing stamps ranging from five thousand to 25,000 rupees to stamp paper sellers for the past few months. When asked at the Dependent Treasury, they say that they did not come from Nashik. Coimbatore and Tirupur districts require high value stamp paper. The Tamil Nadu government should take action,” he said.

High value paper is not available

Coimbatore Zone Joint Director (Accounts/Treasury) Subbulakshmi said, “According to the demand for stamp papers for high value amounts, they are received from other districts and distributed district wise. Stamp paper is available in denominations ranging from Rs.10 to Rs.5,000. Stamp paper for higher value amounts does not come from Chennai. We are investigating in which area it is needed,” he said.
