Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, the world’s number 1 tennis player, has qualified for the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Masters tennis tournament in the United States.
In the 3rd round of men’s singles, he defeated Canada’s Denis Shapovalo in no sets 7-5, 7-5. Next, in the quarterfinals, Medvedev will meet Taylor Fritz of the United States. Fritz, who is ranked 11th in the tournament, defeated Andrei Rublev of Russia, who was ranked 6th, 6-7 (4/7), 6-2, 7-5 in the previous round.
America’s John Sinner beat compatriot Sebastian Kodar in 7-6 (7/3), 1-6, 7-6 (7/4) sets. He will face Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals.
Spain’s Carlos Algaraz Garfia, who is ranked 3rd, beat 14th ranked Marin Cilic of Croatia 7-6 (7/4), 6-1. Garfia next meets England’s Cameron Norrie.
Canada’s Felix Auger Aliassime, who is ranked 7th, beat Italy’s Janic Sinner 2-6, 7-6 (7/1), 6-1. In the quarter-finals, she will face Croatia’s Borna Koric.
Swiatek Defeat: World No. 1 Ika Swiatek of Poland was defeated by American Madison Keys 6-3, 6-4 in the pre-quarterfinals. Keys will meet Kazakhstan’s Elana Rybakina in her quarter-final.
Estonia’s Annette Kontavit, who was ranked 2nd in the tournament, was defeated by China’s Shuai Zhang 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova beat No. 5 Tunisian Anse Zabiur 6-1, 4-6, 6-0. In the quarterfinals, Song will face Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus and Kvitova will face Ajla Tom Lajanovic of Australia.
Meanwhile, US Open champion Jessica Pegula of America defeated England’s Emma Radukanu 7-5, 6-4. Jessica will meet France’s Caroline Garcia in the quarterfinals.
