Why are modern bikes not fitted with a chain sprocket mud guard?| Dinamalar

The part where the chain sprocket is located is covered in the two-wheelers used by our fathers and grandfathers including old Bajas scooters, M-80, Bullet, Yamaha RX-100. But in the 150 cc vehicles including Yamaha R15, Gixxer, Pulsar used by today’s youth, the chain sprocket is visible in the center of the rear wheel. It will not be given a mud card. Many people do not know the reason for this. Let’s find out about this.

One of the most important parts of a two-wheeler is the chain and sprocket. From time to time small and large sprockets (sprockets) and a metal chain are used to rotate the rear wheel of the vehicle in accordance with the rotation of the engine. The vehicle moves only when the chain is properly attached to this sprocket tooth wheel.

When we drive our vehicle on mud, potholes and hills, dirt and grime gets deposited on this chain. This eventually wears down the teeth of the gear wheel. To prevent this, a mud guard is fitted to the chain sprocket set. This will protect the chain sprocket from dust, mud etc. Their lifespan will also increase. 30 years ago the thin chain was used for high speed, underpowered vehicles.

The chain loosens as the vehicle runs. These are tightened by mechanics during vehicle servicing. Thinner chains don’t require frequent service. These rarely fail. Thus, the chain sprocket set of old Splendor, Passion Pro and other vehicles will be completely covered with mud guard. During service the mechanic will remove the mudguard.

But now the vehicles with more torque and power in the market are fitted with bigger wheels and heavier engines. A heavy chain and a strong sprocket are required to spin this wheel. This chain sprocket requires more service and lubricant.

If a mud guard is installed in these vehicles, it is not possible to remove the mud guard and perform chain service in an emergency. And when the heavy chain loosens the mud rubs against the guard. So many companies including Royal Enfield, Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki do not fit chain mudguards to their power bikes. But the drawback is that the chain sprocket without a mud guard gets dirt and dust very often.
