It has been forty years since someone in the Netherlands died as a result of an HIV infection. To commemorate this, there will be ‘House of HIV’ at a number of locations in the city in the coming weeks. In these places, attention is paid to the communities surrounding HIV and AIDS, including in the Tetterode building, which played a major role in the establishment of the ‘pot and fag disco’ De Trut. Here is a room titled Night Sweat, which tells the story of Act Up!’s gay activism.
Another participating organization in House of HIV is Mainline, founded at the time by boys who wanted to stop the AIDS epidemic among intravenous drug users. And part of House of HIV can be found at the HIV association in the Eerste Helmersstraat. You can listen to history stories via the House of HIV website. You can also visit the houseofhiv.nl site for all the information.
