The film is based on the famous novel of the same name by famous Tamil writer Kalki. Mani Ratnam’s production banner Madras Talkies has also produced the film. IMAX Corporation and Leica Productions are bringing Ponniyin Selvan to IMAX screens this September, making it the first Tamil film to make its IMAX debut.

The plot of the film is based on the story of Ponniyin Selvan alias Arunmozhivaram alias Rajaraja Chozhan who was the main ruler of the Chola dynasty. Filming started in 2019.
