Italian returns from holiday with corona, monkey pox and HIV

by time news

A 36-year-old Italian was infected with the corona virus, monkey pox and HIV during his holiday in Spain. This is reported by Italian researchers. According to scientists, such an unfortunate combination has never been established before.

Three days after the first symptoms – cough, headache, muscle aches – the man tested positive for corona for the second time. He also had Covid-19 in January, a few weeks after his vaccinations. A few hours after the positive corona test, the man also got a rash on his left arm and later blisters all over his body. He was rushed to hospital in Catania, on the island of Sicily. In the hospital, the man was subjected to further tests on July 5: doctors had to tell him that he also had the monkeypox virus and HIV.

According to the researchers, the man was carrying high virus loads, which may be an indication that he was recently infected. The man had also tested negative for HIV in September last year. He stated that he had unprotected sex with men in Spain.

After a week in a hospital bed, he was discharged, with only a small scar left. According to the researchers, he had to remain in quarantine at home for a few days because he was still contagious. The man will also have to undergo treatments against HIV. Because only one case of the triple infection is known, the researchers do not dare to draw any conclusions about what the combination means for the severity of the disease course.
