Emmanuel Macron in Algeria: the path to the thaw, with gas in sight

“With winter coming, Macron is going to look for gas in Algeria”: this little music exasperates to the highest degree one of the organizers of the presidential trip to Algiers and Oran: “There are long-term contracts, all that no sense ! This crucial issue is nevertheless on everyone’s mind. Because, at a time when Europeans are in a hurry to get out of dependence on Russian gas, Algeria, one of the world’s top ten producers, is a much-coveted interlocutor. Hasn’t it become Italy’s leading gas supplier in recent months? In the context of energy shortages, warming up relations with Algiers is all the more strategic. However, and this is notable, the Élysée does not want to make it a subject of the official visit which starts this Thursday.
