Apple today won the fifth beta of iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 for public beta testers, opening the iOS 16 beta testing process to the general public. Today’s beta comes within one week after the fourth beta and is compatible with the seventh developer beta.

Public beta testers who are enrolled in Apple’s free beta testing program can download the second beta of iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 over the air after installing the appropriate certification from a public beta site.

iOS 16 brings a redesigned lock screen with customizable wallpapers, time, and widgets, as well as updated notifications for entry from the bottom of the screen. Multiple lock screens are supported and can be linked to focus modes.

The Messages app supports editing and deleting messages as well as marking unread messages. SharePlay is no longer limited to face time, so messages can be used to communicate between people who share content with each other. FaceTime ‌ chats can be moved from one device to another, and the Health app is gaining a new Medication feature to keep track of the vitamins and medications you take.

Apple replaces passwords with password keys, and Safari now supports cross-tab groups for collaboration. In the Mail app, you can schedule emails, cancel sending, and receive follow-up reminders, and Maps supports multi-stop routing.

iCloud Shared Photo Library provides a convenient way to share photos with family members, and Apple Pay will later allow users to pay for Apple Pay purchases in free installments. For iPad, ‌iPadOS 16‌ brings the Weather app and a new multitasking system called Stage Manager, but it’s only intended for iPads equipped with Apple’s silicon chips.
