Former Member of Parliament Ranjan Ramanayake has today (25) submitted an affidavit to the court apologizing for making comments that discredit the judiciary while he is serving his sentence for contempt of court.

On August 21, 2017, Ranjan Ramanayake had made insulting comments about the judiciary outside Alarimalikai.

Sinhala Ravya Organization Secretary Magalkanthe Sudatta Thera and a retired Air Force officer had filed a case in the High Court, saying his comments had undermined faith in the country’s judiciary.

After examining this, the High Court sentenced Ranjan Ramanayake to 4 years rigorous imprisonment for contempt of court on 12 January 2021.

So far, one year and seven months of Ramanayake’s sentence has been completed.

In this case, he has admitted that the comment he made outside Alarimalika was completely false, disgraceful and insulting to the entire judiciary and he has mentioned in his affidavit that he apologizes to the entire judiciary.

He also apologized for the comment he made on 21st August 2017 outside the High Court premises saying that he will not take it back.

He has also given an undertaking in the affidavit that during his lifetime, he will not make any further comment criticizing or disparaging the judiciary as a whole.

It is noteworthy that Ranjan Ramanayake, the former Member of Parliament of United People’s Shakti, who is serving a prison sentence, had recently signed the documents for the presidential amnesty.
