Will visit North Korea if invited: Pope Francis

Vatican: Pope Francis reacts to the possibility of visiting North Korea. The Pope said that if he receives an invitation from North Korea, he will visit.

The Pope also wants North Korea to invite him for the visit.

The news has been reported by the South Korean media KBS.

“I will visit North Korea as soon as they invite me. I say they should definitely invite me. I will never reject it,” Pope Francis said in an interview that aired Thursday, KBS reported.

If the visit goes ahead, it will be the first visit by a pope to North Korea.

It is not clear how many Catholics are among the citizens of North Korea, which is isolated and under the dictatorial rule of King Jong Un, or what their religious beliefs are.

South Korea’s former president Moon Jae-in had earlier requested Pope Francis to visit North Korea. Moon Jae-in made this demand during his meeting with Pope Francis in 2018.

He said that this would help to establish peace on the Korean Peninsula.
