20 million euros released to strengthen hospital security

The State releases funds to fight against cyberattacks targeting health establishments. “The health of the French people will not be taken hostage by these criminals”said the Minister of Health, François Braun, Friday, August 26, at the Sud-Francilien hospital center, in Corbeil-Essonnes, victim of a cyberattack for several days.

“Attacks on hospitals are unfortunately far too frequent”, he lamented. To combat this growing phenomenon, the State had announced that it would devote an envelope of 25 million euros to the cybersecurity of health establishments for 2021 and 2022. “We are strengthening this plan with 20 million, which will be used to strengthen the fight against these cyberattacks”announced Mr. Braun.

One cyberattack per week in 2021

These funds will be drawn from the means released during the Ségur du numérique en santé (announced in July 2020), said the minister’s entourage.

“In 2021, we saw almost one attack per week on our health establishmentsunderlined Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister Delegate in charge of the digital transition, also present on the spot. In 2022, this figure fell in the first half of 50%. » Currently the security plan for establishments of vital importance “concerns 950 establishments, including 150 hospitals”he also recalled.

The 20 million euros “will almost double the number of health establishments benefiting from this security process which will immunize them against this type of attack”, he said. The assistance will consist of carrying out « audits » then to “provide technological and human support”.

Several weeks before a return to normal in Corbeil-Essonnes

Regarding Corbeil-Essonnes, the minister castigated a “particularly unworthy attack, because it affects the most fragile”and thanked the “exemplary mobilization” of the staff of this hospital in the Paris suburbs.

The Sud-Francilien hospital center in Corbeil-Essonnes, south-east of Paris, was the victim of a computer attack overnight from Saturday to Sunday. A ransom demand of $10 million was demanded by the hacker(s).

A return to normal is not expected for several weeks or even months.. Thirteen children out of five hundred patients had to be transferred to other structures because of the attack.
