New Delhi
The CPI-M Politburo has strongly condemned the central government’s attitude of not being ready to take responsibility before the court and the country for using the Pegasus spy software, which is used to spy on the enemy’s forces, against its own citizens. The committee appointed by the Supreme Court to investigate the matter was informed that the central government did not cooperate. Central approach is unacceptable.

The Supreme Court has made it clear that fundamental rights of citizens, especially privacy, should not be compromised in the name of ‘national security’ concerns. Behind the Centre’s insistence is a clear admission that spy software has been misused against high constitutional office holders, opposition leaders, journalists and others. This is an action that destroys the level of democracy and the rights of citizens. As soon as the Pegasus accusation came, many countries started investigating.

Such investigations are ongoing in countries like France, Mexico and Spain. The Israeli government’s investigation revealed that countries like India, Hungary and Saudi Arabia have purchased Pegasus. In this situation, the central government has an obligation to explain and be open. In a statement, the PB demanded that the court ensure that the government fulfills its responsibility.
